Nasal - only syllables in Tswana
نویسنده
چکیده
In Tswana parsing of nasals in syllabic peak position is avoided by deletion. This implies the general ranking *P/NAS >> MAX. However, there are three distinct environments where faithfulness is respected and the marked nasal peaks are preserved onto the surface. These three environments are when the nonparsing of the nasal will result in: (i) a word below the minimal word length requirement of two syllables; (ii) contiguity violations in the head foot of the prosodic word; (iii) total loss of a morpheme. The constraint interaction that is responsible for blocking nasal deletion and forcing the marked nasal peak to emerge are discussed in this paper.

Post-nasal Devoicing in Tswana
Tswana is traditionally described as having a process of post-nasal stop devoicing (/mba/ → [mpa]). If this description is accurate, then Tswana poses a challenge to views that neutralization processes should be articulatorily grounded. Airflow leakage through the nasal cavity should promote, not inhibit, voicing post-nasally. Zsiga et al. [1] performed an acoustic study of the speech of 6 Tswa...
متن کاملUnintuitive phonetic behavior in tswana post-nasal stops
This article describes the phonetic process of post-nasal devoicing in Tswana. We propose a multi-agent exemplar model with various interaction schemes which include factors like functional and social biases in order to account for this counter-intuitive phenomenon. Our novel hybrid multi-agent modeling framework facilitates investigation of sound change by combining the sociophonetic model of ...

Post-nasal voicing is a typologically and historically common process. This process, by which voiceless obstruents become voiced after nasals, has a well-known aerodynamic and perceptual basis: (i) prolonged voicing into the stop closure, vis-à-vis postvocalic stops, due to nasal leakage before full velic closure is achieved and oral cavity expansion due to the velum continuing to raise after v...
متن کاملLithuanian Speech Database LTDIGITS
The Lithuanian speech database LTDIGITS was developed. Some details of this database could be of more general interest. These features are related with collected set of nasal consonant realizations in different vowel contexts. First, LTDIGITS contains nasal – vowel syllables where nasal is before open, middle and closed vowels. Second, the database includes special continuous phrase with above ...
